Xing stands for Crossing, an everyday abbreviation also used in geography and transportation.
Appears on road signs and pavement markings to warn of a crossing, as in "PED XING" (pedestrian crossing), "DEER XING" or "RR XING" (railroad crossing). The letter X represents the word "cross."
Example: Slow down near the school; the sign says PED XING in bright yellow letters.
Usage notes
The X-for-cross convention also appears in shorthand such as Xfer (transfer) and Xroads (crossroads). Many newer signs replace words with pictograms that drivers who do not read English can understand. Painted XING markings are usually paired with a white crosswalk.
