Written aka, AKA or a.k.a.; the form without periods is now the most common. It has long been standard in police and court records listing a suspect's aliases, and it became mainstream in the 20th century. Pronounced as letters or occasionally as "AH-kah." Related terms include "alias," "pen name" and née, which introduces a birth surname.
2. Above-knee amputation (AKA)
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Surgical removal of the leg above the knee, also called transfemoral amputation, typically for severe vascular disease, infection, trauma or tumors.
Example: L AKA; prone lying 20 min TID to prevent hip flexion contracture.
Walking with a transfemoral prosthesis requires substantially more energy than with a below-knee prosthesis, and not all patients become prosthetic walkers. Microprocessor knees improve stability for active users. In general English AKA means "also known as".
