1. Extended detection and response
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
A security approach that correlates detection data across endpoints, email, identity, network and cloud in one platform instead of treating each tool's alerts separately. It extends the EDR concept beyond endpoints.
Example: XDR linked the phishing email, the suspicious login and the endpoint alert into one incident.
Palo Alto Networks coined the term in 2018. Vendors define it differently: "native" XDR uses one vendor's products, while "open" XDR integrates third-party tools. Analysts have called it partly a marketing label, but security tool consolidation has made it a major product category.
2. Special drawing right
Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations
The International Monetary Fund's reserve asset and unit of account, valued from a basket of five currencies: the US dollar, euro, Chinese yuan, Japanese yen and pound sterling. It is used for IMF lending and in some international treaties.
Example: The IMF loan of 3 billion XDR will be disbursed in quarterly tranches.
Created in 1969 to supplement gold and dollar reserves, SDRs do not circulate as money; member countries exchange them for usable currencies. The IMF made a record general allocation of about 456 billion SDRs in 2021 to support recovery from the pandemic. IMF documents usually write SDR.
