Wi-Fi 6E stands for Wi-Fi 6 Extended, a telecom abbreviation.

Extension of Wi-Fi 6 to the 6 GHz band, which adds many wide, uncongested channels for faster, lower-latency connections. Devices need a 6E-capable radio to use it.

Example: The new laptop connects at 6 GHz on the Wi-Fi 6E router, with no interference from neighbors.

Usage notes

In April 2020 the US FCC opened 1,200 MHz of spectrum between 5.925 and 7.125 GHz for unlicensed use, and the Wi-Fi Alliance began certifying 6E devices in early 2021. Many countries, including those in Europe, opened only the lower 500 MHz of the band. 6 GHz signals do not travel through walls as well as 2.4 GHz.
