WHD stands for Wage and Hour Division, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Labor Department division that enforces the federal minimum wage, overtime pay, child labor rules and recordkeeping under the Fair Labor Standards Act, as well as the Family and Medical Leave Act and prevailing-wage laws for federal contracts.
Example: The restaurant paid $200,000 in back wages after a WHD investigation found unpaid overtime.
Usage notes
WHD was created in 1938 along with the Fair Labor Standards Act. Workers can file complaints confidentially, and the division recovers back wages on their behalf. The federal minimum wage it enforces has been $7.25 an hour since July 2009, although many states and cities set higher rates.
