VVC stands for Versatile Video Coding, a file format abbreviation.
Video compression standard finalized in 2020, also called H.266, designed to cut bit rates by about half compared with HEVC, with features for 8K, HDR and 360-degree video.
Example: The broadcaster is testing VVC for future 8K transmissions.
Usage notes
ITU-T and ISO/IEC developed VVC through the Joint Video Experts Team. Adoption has been slow because of royalty uncertainty and competition from the royalty-free AV1, and few consumer devices decode it in hardware. Fraunhofer HHI published open encoder and decoder implementations to encourage uptake.
