CategoriesMedical

VP shunt stands for Ventriculoperitoneal shunt, a neurology abbreviation.

Surgically implanted tube that drains excess cerebrospinal fluid from a brain ventricle into the abdominal cavity, where it is absorbed, to treat hydrocephalus. A one-way valve controls the drainage rate, and many valves can be adjusted with an external magnet.

Example: Shunt series and CT ordered for headache and vomiting in a child with a VP shunt; suspect shunt malfunction.

Usage notes

Shunts are prone to blockage, infection, disconnection and overdrainage, and a large share of pediatric shunts need revision within the first two years. Symptoms of failure include headache, vomiting, drowsiness and, in infants, a bulging fontanelle. MRI magnets can change the setting of programmable valves, so they are checked after scans. Ventriculoatrial and lumboperitoneal shunts are alternatives.
