USG stands for Ultrasonography, a medical imaging abbreviation.
Term for diagnostic ultrasound used on reports and requisitions in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and parts of Asia and Africa, as in "USG whole abdomen". It refers to the same sound-wave imaging called US or sonography in North America.
Example: USG whole abdomen: mild hepatomegaly with grade I fatty changes.
Usage notes
"Whole abdomen" studies and grading of fatty liver are typical features of USG reports in South Asia. In India, prenatal ultrasound is regulated under the PCPNDT Act, which prohibits revealing fetal sex, and clinics display notices saying so. Depending on the country, scans are performed by radiologists, sonologists or sonographers.
