UIFSA stands for Uniform Interstate Family Support Act, an estate and family law abbreviation.

Uniform law, in force in every state, governing how child and spousal support orders are established, enforced and modified when the parties live in different states. It ensures that only one controlling support order exists at a time.

Example: The Texas agency registered the Georgia support order under UIFSA to garnish the father's wages.

Usage notes

First approved in 1992; federal welfare reform in 1996 required every state to adopt it as a condition of federal funding. Its 2008 amendments, which Congress required states to adopt in 2014, implement the Hague Child Support Convention for international cases. Pronounced "YOU-if-sah".
