1. Uganda
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Uganda, capital Kampala, alpha-3 UGA, contains the source of the White Nile at Jinja on Lake Victoria and about half of the world's mountain gorillas, in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Example: Mountain gorilla permits in UG are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Winston Churchill called Uganda the Pearl of Africa. English and Swahili are official languages. The Ugandan shilling trades as UGX.
2. Unternehmergesellschaft (haftungsbeschränkt) (entrepreneurial company with limited liability)
Business & Finance · Company Type Abbreviations
German "mini-GmbH" that can be formed with as little as €1 of share capital. It must use the full suffix "UG (haftungsbeschränkt)" and retain a quarter of each year's profit until its capital reaches €25,000, when it can convert to a regular GmbH.
Example: The two founders registered their app studio as a UG (haftungsbeschränkt) with €500 of share capital.
The UG was created by the 2008 MoMiG reform of the GmbH law, partly to compete with the UK private limited company, which German entrepreneurs had been using because of its low capital requirement. The words "haftungsbeschränkt" in parentheses are a mandatory part of the name; "UG" alone is not sufficient.
3. Undergraduate
Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations
Shorthand, common in British, Indian and international university documents, for undergraduate (bachelor's-level) study or students. It is widely used in prospectuses, admissions pages and timetables, often paired with PG.
Example: UG applicants should apply through UCAS by the January deadline.
Americans also use it informally, as in "UG research", but more often write "undergrad". In India the term appears in exam names such as NEET-UG. The contrast with PG is especially common in fee tables and visa documents.
