B Corp stands for Certified B Corporation, a company type abbreviation.
Certification awarded by the nonprofit B Lab to for-profit companies that meet standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability to stakeholders. Companies have traditionally needed at least 80 points on the B Impact Assessment and must recertify every three years.
Example: Ben & Jerry's and Patagonia are among the best-known companies to carry B Corp certification.
Usage notes
B Corp is a certification, not a legal entity type, although certified companies must amend governing documents to consider stakeholders, often by becoming a benefit corporation where available. B Lab was founded in 2006, and more than 8,000 companies worldwide had been certified by 2024. B Lab has developed revised standards that move away from the single 80-point score toward requirements across several impact topics.
