UDRP stands for Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy, an intellectual property abbreviation.
Procedure adopted by ICANN in 1999 that lets trademark owners challenge abusive domain name registrations, known as cybersquatting, through quick online proceedings instead of court. The complainant must show the domain is confusingly similar to its mark, the registrant has no legitimate interest and the name was registered and used in bad faith.
Example: The brand owner won its UDRP case, and the panel ordered the lookalike domain transferred.
Usage notes
Cases are decided by panels from approved providers, chiefly the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center and Forum (formerly the National Arbitration Forum). Remedies are limited to cancellation or transfer of the domain, with no damages. All generic top-level domains and many country-code domains are subject to it.
