TRIPS stands for Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, an intellectual property abbreviation.
World Trade Organization agreement, in effect since 1995, that sets minimum standards for copyright, trademarks, patents, geographical indications, industrial designs and trade secrets that all WTO members must provide. It also requires effective enforcement and subjects IP disputes to WTO dispute settlement.
Example: Under TRIPS, member countries must make patents available in all fields of technology for at least 20 years.
Usage notes
Negotiated in the Uruguay Round of trade talks from 1986 to 1994. Developing countries received transition periods, and least-developed countries' pharmaceutical obligations have been extended repeatedly. The 2001 Doha Declaration confirmed members' right to issue compulsory licenses for public health, and a limited waiver for COVID-19 vaccine patents was agreed in 2022.
