TSAT stands for Transferrin saturation, a laboratory test abbreviation.
Percentage of transferrin's iron-binding sites occupied, calculated as serum iron divided by TIBC, multiplied by 100. Values below about 20 percent suggest iron deficiency, while values above roughly 45 percent raise suspicion of iron overload and are used to screen for hereditary hemochromatosis.
Example: TSAT 62% with ferritin 1,100; HFE genotyping ordered.
Usage notes
Results swing with recent iron intake and time of day, so screening is ideally done on a fasting morning sample and repeated if abnormal. Kidney disease guidelines use TSAT together with ferritin to decide on intravenous iron for patients on dialysis. Sometimes abbreviated Tsat or TS%.
