CategoriesMedical

TPO stands for Thyroid peroxidase (antibodies), an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.

Enzyme that helps make thyroid hormone; antibodies against it (anti-TPO) mark autoimmune thyroid disease and are found in most people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Positive antibodies predict a higher chance that mild thyroid dysfunction will progress to overt hypothyroidism.

Example: TPO antibodies 640 IU/mL with TSH 6.1: Hashimoto's thyroiditis, start low-dose levothyroxine.

Usage notes

Older reports call them antimicrosomal antibodies. About 10 percent of the general population have positive TPO antibodies without disease. In pregnancy, positive antibodies are associated with higher miscarriage and postpartum thyroiditis risk. Repeat testing once positive rarely changes management.
