TIMSS stands for Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, a standardized test abbreviation.
International assessment of mathematics and science in grades 4 and 8, run every four years since 1995 by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). Unlike PISA, it is closely tied to what school curricula actually teach.
Example: In TIMSS 2023, Singapore again led all countries in fourth- and eighth-grade mathematics.
Usage notes
Boston College's TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center directs the study. The 2019 cycle began the move to computer-based "eTIMSS". Background questionnaires for students, teachers and principals let researchers link scores to curriculum, instruction and home resources. Pronounced "tims".
