1. Therm
Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations
Heat energy equal to 100,000 BTU, about 105.5 megajoules or 29.3 kWh, used to bill residential natural gas in the US. A gas-heated home might use 50 to 150 therms in a cold winter month.
Example: Natural gas: 87 thm at $1.42 per thm, plus delivery charges.
Utilities convert the cubic feet on the meter to therms using the gas's heating value; 100 cubic feet (CCF) is about 1.04 thm. The UK once billed gas in therms but now uses kWh. The decatherm (Dth), ten therms, equals one MMBtu and appears in pipeline contracts.
2. Theorem (Thm)
Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations
Abbreviation for theorem in lecture notes, textbooks and slides, as in "Thm 3.2", where results are numbered by chapter and section. A theorem is a statement proved from axioms and earlier results.
Example: By Thm 4.1, every bounded monotone sequence converges.
Related labels include Lem (lemma, a helper result), Prop (proposition, a result of moderate importance), Cor (corollary) and Def (definition). LaTeX packages such as amsthm let authors define a thm environment that numbers these automatically.
3. Master of Theology (ThM)
Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations
Advanced theology degree that most American seminaries award as a one-year program after the MDiv, allowing deeper study in a single area. Dallas Theological Seminary is a notable exception: its flagship ThM is a four-year program taken instead of an MDiv.
Example: He returned to Princeton Theological Seminary for a ThM in New Testament after five years in parish ministry.
Written Th.M. The Latin original is Theologiae Magister. A ThM often serves as preparation for PhD or ThD study. Outside the US, the title is used by some universities for research or taught master's degrees in theology.
