1. Singular value decomposition
Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations
Factorization of any matrix A into UΣVᵀ, where U and V are orthogonal matrices and Σ is diagonal with nonnegative singular values. It underlies data compression, least squares, recommender systems and principal component analysis.
Example: Keeping the top 50 singular values from the SVD compresses the image with little visible loss.
The SVD exists for every matrix, square or not, unlike the eigendecomposition. Truncating it gives the best low-rank approximation, a result known as the Eckart-Young theorem (1936). The Netflix Prize competition of 2006 to 2009 popularized SVD-style matrix factorization for recommendations.
2. Society of the Divine Word
Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations
One of the largest Catholic missionary congregations, founded in 1875 by St. Arnold Janssen at Steyl in the Netherlands. The SVD works in more than 70 countries.
Example: Fr. Paul Nguyen, SVD, served as a missionary in Papua New Guinea for twelve years.
From the Latin Societas Verbi Divini. The congregation runs universities and seminaries in Asia and has long been active among African American Catholics in the southern US. Janssen also founded two congregations of missionary sisters.
