ThD stands for Doctor of Theology, a degree abbreviation.
Research doctorate in theology, equivalent in rigor to a PhD, awarded by a small number of American divinity schools such as Duke and by many European and South African universities. Harvard Divinity School historically awarded it before moving its doctoral students to the PhD.
Example: His ThD dissertation examined Augustine's influence on medieval preaching.
Usage notes
Written Th.D.; the Latin original is Theologiae Doctor, and the German equivalent is Dr. theol. Some unaccredited institutions also issue ThD degrees, so the awarding school's accreditation should be checked. The ThD is distinct from the STD conferred by Catholic pontifical faculties.
