TAH stands for Total abdominal hysterectomy, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Removal of the uterus and cervix through an incision in the abdomen, used for large fibroids, cancer and other conditions when a less invasive route is not suitable. "Total" refers to removing the cervix, not the ovaries.
Example: TAH-BSO for 18-week-size fibroid uterus with anemia.
Usage notes
Hysterectomy is one of the most common surgeries for women in the US. ACOG recommends vaginal or laparoscopic routes when feasible because recovery is faster. Removal of the ovaries is noted separately as BSO, often combined as TAH-BSO. A supracervical hysterectomy leaves the cervix in place.
