1. Sit to stand
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Functional transfer from sitting to standing, a key skill for independent living that is trained and documented in physical and occupational therapy notes with the assistance level needed.
Example: STS from standard height chair Min A, cues for anterior weight shift.
Chair height, armrests and foot position strongly affect difficulty. Leaning forward with "nose over toes" is a common cue. The movement is also the basis of tests such as the Five Times Sit to Stand. In other contexts STS may mean the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
2. Sonar Technician (Submarine)
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Submarine sonar operators who listen for and analyze sounds from ships, submarines and marine life, giving the boat its main means of seeing underwater. They also maintain the sonar arrays and processing equipment.
Example: STS1 Doyle classified the contact as a merchant ship by its propeller blade rate.
Submariners rely almost entirely on passive sonar, so STSs are central to the boat's stealth and survival. Like all submariners they earn dolphins through qualification. The surface-ship counterpart is the STG, which uses more active sonar.
3. Saints (Sts.)
Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations
Plural abbreviation of Saint, used before the names of two or more saints, as in the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul or Sts. Cyril and Methodius. It is common in church names, liturgical calendars and Catholic school names.
Example: The Sts. Peter and Paul festival is held each year on the last weekend of June.
The Latin-derived form SS. (sancti) is also used, especially in British and older Catholic writing, as in SS. Peter and Paul. AP style uses Sts. Church names should follow the parish's own preferred form.
