SOCOM stands for United States Special Operations Command, a military unit and organization abbreviation.
Functional combatant command that organizes, trains and equips US special operations forces from all services, including Army Special Forces and Rangers, Navy SEALs, Air Force special tactics airmen and Marine Raiders. It is headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.
Example: SOCOM requested more funding for long-range intelligence and drone programs.
Usage notes
Created in 1987 by the Nunn-Cohen amendment to the Goldwater-Nichols Act after the failed 1980 Iranian hostage rescue exposed coordination problems. Uniquely among combatant commands, it has its own budget for special operations equipment. Often written USSOCOM.
