1. Sirach
Religion · Bible Book Abbreviations
Long wisdom book of 51 chapters by Jesus ben Sira, a Jerusalem scribe, written in Hebrew around 180 BC and translated into Greek by his grandson. It is also known as Ecclesiasticus and contains the hymn "Let us now praise famous men" (44:1).
Example: Proverbs about friendship fill Sir. 6.
SBL and Catholic Bibles use Sir, while older references abbreviate Ecclesiasticus as Ecclus. Context separates Sir. from the title Sir. Hebrew manuscripts of large parts of the book were found in the Cairo Geniza and at Masada.
2. Self-insured retention (SIR)
Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations
Amount the insured must pay itself, including defense costs, before a liability policy responds, common in large commercial programs. Unlike a deductible, the insurer does not handle or pay the claim first.
Example: With a $250,000 SIR, we handle smaller claims through our own TPA.
SIRs let larger companies lower premiums and control smaller claims.
