SHSAT stands for Specialized High Schools Admissions Test, a standardized test abbreviation.
Exam that decides admission to eight of New York City's nine specialized public high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech. Eighth and ninth graders take a three-hour test of English language arts and mathematics, and seats are offered strictly by score and school preference.
Example: Tens of thousands of eighth graders sit the SHSAT each fall for a few thousand specialized high school seats.
Usage notes
The ninth school, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, admits by audition. The 1971 Hecht-Calandra Act requires exam-based admission to the original specialized schools, which has made proposals to change the system politically contentious.
