1. Release to manufacturing
Technology & Computing · Software Abbreviations
Milestone at which a final software build is handed to hardware makers and disc manufacturers, historically weeks or months before retail availability. Microsoft long used the term for Windows and Office.
Example: Windows 7 reached RTM in July 2009, three months before it went on sale.
The term dates from the era when software shipped on floppy disks and CDs that had to be pressed and boxed. With online distribution, vendors speak of "release to web" (RTW) or simply GA. Apple's equivalent was GM, golden master. In chat, RTM can also mean "read the manual".
