1. Over-the-air broadcasting
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Free television and radio received with an antenna from local broadcast transmitters, as opposed to cable, satellite or streaming. Many cord-cutters use an OTA antenna for local news and sports.
Example: We canceled cable and use an OTA antenna for the local channels and the football games.
In the United States OTA signals use ATSC standards, and a digital antenna with a TV's built-in tuner is all that is needed. Reception depends on distance from transmitters, terrain and antenna placement; online maps help estimate which channels are available. Network-attached tuners can share OTA channels to phones around the home. In software, OTA instead refers to wireless updates.
2. Over-the-air update
Technology & Computing · Software Abbreviations
Software or firmware update delivered wirelessly over Wi-Fi or a cellular connection, without plugging the device into a computer. Phones, cars, smart TVs, wearables and IoT gadgets receive OTA updates.
Example: The automaker pushed an OTA update that fixed the recall without a service visit.
iPhones have received OTA system updates since iOS 5 in 2011, and Tesla popularized OTA updates for cars. Updates are cryptographically signed and are often installed to a spare partition (A/B updates) so a failed install can roll back automatically. In broadcasting, OTA refers instead to free antenna television.
3. Over-the-air updates
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Software updates delivered to a vehicle wirelessly through its cellular or Wi-Fi connection, adding features, fixing bugs or addressing recalls without a dealer visit. Tesla pioneered the practice in cars in 2012.
Example: The OTA update overnight added a new dashcam feature and fixed the Bluetooth bug.
Many recalls are now resolved by OTA updates, though regulators still classify them as recalls. Automakers increasingly use OTA to sell subscriptions or unlock features after purchase. Updates that change braking or steering behavior raise regulatory and cybersecurity questions. In travel, OTA means online travel agency.
4. Organized team activities
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Voluntary offseason practices that NFL teams hold in late spring, usually about ten sessions without live contact. They follow the offseason conditioning program and precede mandatory minicamp in June.
Example: The star receiver skipped OTAs while negotiating a contract extension.
Under the 2020 collective bargaining agreement, OTAs are voluntary and padded contact is not allowed. Attendance becomes news when players stay away during contract disputes. Almost always used in the plural, OTAs.
