CategoriesTechnology & Computing

QPS stands for Queries per second, a data & database abbreviation.

A throughput measure counting how many requests or database queries a system handles each second. It is used to size servers, set rate limits and track load on search engines, APIs and databases.

Example: The search cluster peaks at 12,000 QPS on Black Friday, so we add replicas in November.

Usage notes

Usually reported alongside latency percentiles such as p99, since a system can sustain high throughput while individual requests slow down. Closely related to RPS, requests per second. Capacity planning targets peak rather than average load.
