OLTP stands for Online transaction processing, a data & database abbreviation.
Database workloads made of many short, concurrent transactions that insert and update individual records, such as orders, payments, bookings and stock movements. OLTP systems prioritize fast writes, consistency and high availability.
Example: Don't run heavy reports against the OLTP database during checkout hours; use the replica.
Usage notes
Transactional databases are usually normalized and row-oriented, while analytical systems are often denormalized and columnar. The TPC-C benchmark measures OLTP performance in transactions per minute. Systems handling both workloads are called HTAP, hybrid transactional/analytical processing.
