PL/SQL stands for Procedural Language/SQL, a data & database abbreviation.
Oracle's procedural extension to SQL, adding variables, loops, conditionals, exception handling and packages, used to write stored procedures, functions and triggers that run inside Oracle databases.
Example: The nightly billing logic lives in a PL/SQL package, not in the Java application.
Usage notes
Its syntax descends from the Ada programming language. PostgreSQL's PL/pgSQL is closely modeled on it, which eases migrations from Oracle. Companies with large Oracle estates hire specifically for PL/SQL skills, and much core banking and telecom billing logic is written in it.
