QLED stands for Quantum dot light-emitting diode, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
Samsung's marketing name, also used by TCL, Hisense and others, for LCD TVs with a quantum dot film that improves color and brightness. Despite the name, QLED TVs are backlit LCDs, not self-emitting like OLED.
Example: The QLED is brighter than the OLED, so it suits our sunny living room.
Usage notes
Samsung adopted the QLED brand in 2017, a choice critics said was designed to sound like OLED. True quantum-dot electroluminescent displays, where the dots themselves emit light, remain in development. Picture quality varies widely among QLED models, largely depending on whether they use local dimming or Mini-LED backlights.
