PGCE stands for Postgraduate Certificate in Education, a degree abbreviation.

One-year teacher training course in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for university graduates, combining academic study with at least 120 days of school placements. Successful trainees in England are recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), required to teach in state-maintained schools.

Example: After her history degree, she took a secondary PGCE and now teaches at a comprehensive in Leeds.

Usage notes

Some providers award the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, which carries undergraduate-level rather than master's-level credits. Scotland uses the PGDE (Professional Graduate Diploma in Education). International schools often recruit PGCE holders, and an international PGCE without QTS is also offered.
