OF-5 stands for NATO officer grade 5, a military pay grade abbreviation.
Colonels and naval captains in allied forces, including US O-6s, British Army colonels, Royal Navy captains and RAF group captains. Officers at this level command brigades, regiments, large warships and air stations or serve as senior staff officers.
Example: The NATO job posting asks for an OF-5 planner with maritime experience.
Usage notes
A Royal Navy or US Navy captain at OF-5 is six grades senior to an army captain at OF-2, one of the most common sources of confusion in joint and coalition settings. Group captain is the RAF's equivalent title.
