OF-9 stands for NATO officer grade 9, a military pay grade abbreviation.
Four-star officers of the alliance: US generals and admirals, British generals, Royal Navy admirals and RAF air chief marshals. NATO's two strategic commanders hold this rank, as do most national chiefs of defence.
Example: The Supreme Allied Commander Europe, always an American OF-9, leads Allied Command Operations.
Usage notes
Four-star officers are the highest ranks routinely held in peacetime by NATO nations. National chiefs of defence meet as NATO's Military Committee, the alliance's senior military authority, which advises the North Atlantic Council. The committee's chairman is also a four-star officer elected from among those chiefs.
