OF-1 stands for NATO officer grade 1, a military pay grade abbreviation.
NATO code covering the two most junior commissioned grades: US second and first lieutenants and Navy ensigns and lieutenants junior grade, British Army second lieutenants and lieutenants, Royal Navy sub-lieutenants and RAF pilot officers and flying officers.
Example: Both of the platoon commanders on the exchange program were OF-1s, one British and one American.
Usage notes
The NATO officer scale runs from OF-1 to OF-10, with OF(D) used for officer cadets and midshipmen in training. Because OF-1 spans two US pay grades, a British lieutenant compares with a US first lieutenant rather than with a Navy lieutenant, who is OF-2.
