ODR stands for Online dispute resolution, a litigation abbreviation.
Use of internet platforms to resolve disputes through negotiation, mediation or adjudication without in-person hearings. It began with e-commerce disputes and has spread to courts for small claims, traffic matters and debt cases.
Example: The small claims court sent both parties a link to its ODR platform before scheduling any hearing.
Usage notes
Online marketplaces pioneered the approach to handle huge volumes of buyer-seller disputes. British Columbia's Civil Resolution Tribunal, launched in 2016, was Canada's first online tribunal. Several US state courts now offer ODR for small claims and traffic tickets.
