Nat 20 stands for Natural 20, a gaming slang abbreviation.

Rolling a 20 on a 20-sided die (d20) before modifiers, the best possible result in Dungeons & Dragons and other d20 games. Often means automatic success or a critical hit.

Example: Rolled a nat 20 on persuasion, so the guard believes our terrible lie.

Usage notes

In Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition, a natural 20 on an attack roll is a critical hit, but the official rules do not make every ability check an automatic success, a point many tables ignore by house rule. A "nat 1" is the worst roll and often a comic failure. Used as a metaphor for great luck.
