MND stands for Motor neuron disease, a neurology abbreviation.

Group of disorders in which the nerve cells controlling voluntary muscles degenerate, including ALS, primary lateral sclerosis, progressive muscular atrophy and progressive bulbar palsy. In the UK and Australia MND is the everyday name for ALS.

Example: Referred to the MND clinic for multidisciplinary care: speech therapy, nutrition and respiratory review.

Usage notes

Physicist Stephen Hawking lived with MND for more than 50 years after his diagnosis at 21, an unusually long survival. Multidisciplinary clinics improve quality of life and survival through nutritional support, noninvasive ventilation and assistive technology. Spinal muscular atrophy and Kennedy disease are related inherited motor neuron diseases.
