LOTO stands for Lockout/tagout, an engineering abbreviation.

Safety procedure that ensures machines and equipment are isolated from all energy sources, such as electricity, hydraulic pressure, steam or gravity, and cannot be restarted while being serviced. Workers apply personal locks and warning tags to energy-isolating devices.

Example: Before clearing the jam, the mechanic applied LOTO to the press and tested that it would not start.

Usage notes

In the United States LOTO is governed by OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.147, issued in 1989, which is consistently among the agency's most frequently cited violations. Each worker keeps the only key to their own lock. Verifying zero energy after isolation is a required step.
