JPML stands for Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, a court abbreviation.

Panel of seven federal judges, designated by the Chief Justice, that decides whether civil cases pending in different districts that share common factual questions should be transferred to one judge for coordinated pretrial proceedings. It also selects the transferee court and judge.

Example: The JPML centralized the 200 product-liability actions in the District of New Jersey.

Usage notes

Created in 1968 under 28 U.S.C. § 1407. The Panel holds hearing sessions every other month in different cities. Each centralized proceeding receives an MDL number. Cases are supposed to return to their original courts for trial, but most settle or are resolved during the MDL.
