Jon. stands for Jonah, a Bible book abbreviation.

Book of four chapters about a reluctant prophet who flees God's command to preach to Nineveh, is swallowed by a great fish and spends three days inside before obeying. Jesus cites "the sign of Jonah" in the Gospels.

Example: The story of Jonah and the great fish in Jon. 1–2 is a favorite in children's Bibles.

Usage notes

SBL leaves Jonah unabbreviated; Chicago's traditional list uses Jon. and short forms Jon. Do not confuse Jon. with Jn (John). Jews read the book in the afternoon service on Yom Kippur because of its theme of repentance.
