IVMP stands for Intravenous methylprednisolone, a drug abbreviation.

High-dose IV steroid "pulse" therapy, typically 500 to 1,000 mg daily for three to five days, used for multiple sclerosis relapses, optic neuritis, lupus flares, vasculitis and acute transplant rejection.

Example: MS relapse: IVMP 1 g daily x 3 days; no oral taper.

Usage notes

The Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (1992) showed IV methylprednisolone sped visual recovery, while low-dose oral prednisone alone increased recurrence. High-dose oral regimens are now considered acceptable alternatives for MS relapses. Pulses can cause high blood sugar, insomnia, mood changes and a metallic taste.
