HMP stands for His Majesty's Prison, a UK government abbreviation.
Prefix used in the names of prisons in the UK, as in HMP Belmarsh or HMP Wandsworth, and in prisoners' addresses. Young offender institutions use the prefix HMYOI instead.
Example: Letters should be addressed to the prisoner at HMP Wandsworth with his prison number.
Usage notes
The prefix changed from "Her" to "His" Majesty's Prison after the accession of King Charles III in 2022. Most prisons are run by HMPPS, though some are privately operated under contract and still carry the HMP name. Category A prisons hold those considered the most dangerous.
