HHD stands for Hypertensive heart disease, a cardiology abbreviation.
Structural and functional heart changes caused by long-standing high blood pressure, including left ventricular hypertrophy, diastolic dysfunction, left atrial enlargement and eventually heart failure. It is a major contributor to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and to atrial fibrillation.
Example: Problem list: HHD with LVH and diastolic dysfunction; target BP below 130/80.
Usage notes
ICD-10 codes I11 and I13 cover hypertensive heart disease and hypertensive heart and chronic kidney disease, and US coding rules presume a causal link between hypertension and heart failure unless the documentation says otherwise. Good blood pressure control can partly reverse the hypertrophy. Global burden studies count HHD among the leading cardiovascular causes of death.
