H/T stands for Hat tip, a social media abbreviation.
Credits the person or account that led the writer to a link, story or idea, as in "h/t @username." Used by journalists, bloggers and newsletter writers on X, LinkedIn and personal sites.
Example: Great thread on the history of subway maps, h/t to Maria for sharing it.
Usage notes
Borrowed from the gesture of tipping one's hat in acknowledgment, the abbreviation became a blogging convention in the 2000s. Also written HT or "hat tip to." Similar to "via," though "via" names the direct source while "h/t" thanks whoever pointed the writer to it. Acceptable in professional writing.
