CategoriesMedical

GPC stands for Gram-positive cocci, an infectious disease abbreviation.

Microbiology description of round bacteria that stain purple on Gram stain. Clusters suggest staphylococci, while pairs and chains suggest streptococci or enterococci, which guides early antibiotic choice.

Example: Blood culture GPC in clusters, 2 of 2 sets; start vancomycin, repeat cultures in 48 hours.

Usage notes

A single positive blood culture with coagulase-negative staphylococci is often a skin contaminant, while S. aureus is never dismissed as one. Rapid PCR tests detect S. aureus and the mecA gene within hours. In ophthalmology GPC means giant papillary conjunctivitis.
