CategoriesMedical

EPT stands for Expedited partner therapy, an infectious disease abbreviation.

Practice of giving patients medication or a prescription to deliver to their sex partners, without the partners being examined, to treat chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomoniasis. It reduces reinfection when partners are unlikely to seek care.

Example: Chlamydia positive; EPT with doxycycline provided for one partner along with written instructions.

Usage notes

The CDC recommends EPT for heterosexual partners, and it is permitted in most US states, though laws differ. Partner-delivered medication is not routinely advised for men who have sex with men because of the need to screen for other infections such as HIV and syphilis.
