HAART stands for Highly active antiretroviral therapy, an infectious disease abbreviation.
Term coined in the mid-1990s for the then-new combinations of three or more antiretroviral drugs, including protease inhibitors, that dramatically cut AIDS deaths. It is now largely replaced by "ART" or "cART" (combination ART).
Example: PMH: HIV diagnosed 1993, started HAART in 1997, undetectable since 2005.
Usage notes
The 1996 International AIDS Conference in Vancouver, where triple-drug results were presented, marked the turning point. "Highly active" became redundant once every recommended regimen was a potent combination. Pronounced "hart", like the deer. It survives in older literature and patient histories.
