FWF stands for Free water flush, a nursing abbreviation.
Plain water pushed through a feeding tube on a schedule to provide hydration and keep the tube from clogging. It is ordered separately from the formula because most tube feeds contain only about 70 to 85 percent water.
Example: FWF 200 mL q4h via PEG; hold if sodium below 133.
Usage notes
Flushes are also given before and after each medication through the tube, typically 15 to 30 mL in adults. Free water amounts are adjusted to correct high sodium or reduced in fluid overload. Sterile water may be required for immunocompromised patients or jejunal tubes, depending on facility policy.
