HAPI stands for Hospital-acquired pressure injury, a nursing abbreviation.
Pressure injury that develops after admission rather than being present on arrival. Hospitals track HAPIs as a nurse-sensitive quality indicator and investigate serious ones.
Example: Skin assessment on admission documented no wounds; new stage 2 sacral HAPI found day 5.
Usage notes
Documenting skin carefully within hours of admission matters because injuries not recorded as present on admission are counted as hospital-acquired. In the United States, stage 3 and 4 pressure injuries acquired in hospital are Medicare hospital-acquired conditions that do not earn extra payment. Prevention bundles include risk scoring, turning and moisture control.
