FSBS stands for Fingerstick blood sugar, a nursing abbreviation.
Capillary glucose measurement taken from a fingertip with a lancet and a bedside meter, commonly ordered before meals and at bedtime for patients with diabetes or on insulin or steroids. Results guide correctional insulin doses.
Example: FSBS AC and HS; call for FSBS less than 70 or greater than 400.
Usage notes
Also called fingerstick blood glucose (FSBG), capillary blood glucose (CBG), POC glucose or "Accu-Chek" after a Roche meter brand. Meters lose accuracy at extremes and in poor circulation, so very high or low readings are often confirmed with a laboratory glucose. Checks for mealtime insulin should be done shortly before the meal arrives.
